Salt therapy, or halotherapy, is a growing spa trend involving inhaling salt particles to potentially improve breathing and lung health. Though it seems new, the practice dates back to the 1800s, when Polish and German doctors observed respiratory benefits among people exposed to salt mines and caves. Today, salt rooms are found worldwide, including in the U.S.

While theories suggest salt may kill microorganisms, reduce inflammation, or thin mucus, the scientific community remains uncertain about its exact benefits. Dr. Norman Edelman of the American Lung Association notes it may offer symptom relief for people with asthma or COPD by helping clear mucus and avoiding allergens
